Cybersecurity researchers say they’re seeing a big spike in romance spam ahead of Valentine’s Day. And, Consumer Reports says, it's being spread by one of the world's most powerful botnets. The Rise of Valentine’s Day-themed Domains The WhoisXML API’s Domain Research Suite (DRS) identifies newly registered domains with Valentine’s Day themes. This highlights a significant increase in domain registrations containing keywords like “Valentine,” “love,” “flowers,” etc. Necurs botnet made headline again, the experts at IBM X-Force research team observed a spike in seasonal campaigns of Valentine’s Day-themed spam emails. Necurs botnet activity is spiking as scammers use the network to flood inboxes with promises of companionship, in part of a seasonal wave of Valentine’s Day-themed spam. Victims are encouraged to share revealing photos of themselves, which scammers later use as leverage in extortion shakedowns. Scammers are mow using the Necurs botnet to send out an amazing number of messages offering companionship waiting for Valentine’s day. Crooks are using the spam messages to trick victims into sharing personal photos that are used later by cybercriminals to blackmail the victims. According to the IBM X-Force team, the campaign started in mid Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Necurs botnet has mounted a massive spam campaign focused on dating lures. The uptick started in mid-January 2018 and continues as time draws near for Valentine’s Day on February 14, according to IBM X-Force. The campaign delivers short email blurbs from supposed Russian women living in the US. Every February, Valentine’s day email scams are to be expected and this year has been no different. On Monday, a massive new phishing campaign was launched. The Necurs botnet was used to deliver millions upon millions of dating, romance and Valentine’s themed emails. Dating and Valentine’s Day Email Scams Pose Problems for Businesses The Necurs botnet has sent over 230 million dating spam emails since mid-January, as scammers aim to take advantage of Valentine's Day in a widespread social engineering attack. The malicious site contains what looks like a Valentine's Day message with giant red heart that informs users that a download "should begin shortly." The Necurs botnet is notorious for its massive spam campaigns and is believed to control up to 6 million zombie bots . Waledac isn't the only botnet running Valentine's Day spam scams.
