Recycling Boxes. Valentine’s Day comes with boxes of all shapes and sizes. They could protect your online flower order, the chocolates you ate in one sitting (we won’t judge) or a piece of jewelry. Here’s what you need to know about recycling your different boxes: Cardboard boxes can go right in the recycling bin. Maybe: Valentine’s Day Cards. YES: Paper-based cards can be recycled. NO: Cards with foils, batteries, music players, metal charms, or plastic add-ons. Tip: Remove any non-paper parts before recycling, or use them for a fun craft project. No: Candy Wrappers. Candy wrappers are made of mixed materials that can’t be recycled. Giving you a heads up for Valentine’s Day so your faux pas of throwing the empty wine bottle into the trash instead of the recycling doesn’t dim the mood for your special night. Instead of buying paper cards, try: Plantable seed cards that grow into flowers or herbs. E-cards or video messages to reduce waste. Handmade cards from recycled materials. According to the Greeting Card Association, 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged yearly in the U.S. alone⁵. 6. The tradition of giving gifts on Valentine’s Day can be both meaningful and sustainable. Here are some great examples of better options to show your love. There are plenty of recycled products perfect for that special person in Valentine’s Day cards: Plenty of recyclers will take old greeting cards either through curbside recycling or at their drop-off centers. Recycling paper has many advantages — which is particularly important, as many paper cards will be received by people on Valentine’s Day. What happens afterwards takes a few forms.
