Valentine’s Day is more than romance; it celebrates love in all forms. Its history blends ancient and Christian traditions, emphasizing connection and appreciation. "In that way, Valentine's Day is important because it gives you the opportunity to show people you care about them." Sophia Kemling, a sophomore studying nursing, is doing the same thing on the Downtown campus. She is part of the Resident Hall Association and Changemaker Central, both organizations that are hosting Valentine's Day events this week. The giving of flowers on Valentine's Day became a tradition in the 18th century. The rose was the choice of the day because it symbolized love. Over time, other flowers were added, and each flower is also symbolic. Valentine’s Day is widely recognized as a celebration of love and affection, but the origins of the day are somewhat ambiguous. As the holiday evolved from a blend of Roman rituals, Christian traditions, and medieval courtly love through centuries, chocolates and flowers became nearly synonymous with February 14.
