As in the U.S., in Guatemala, Valentine's Day is a time to exchange gifts, with chocolates, cards, and flowers just as popular as they are among Americans. But for Guatemalans, El Día del Cariño is also a festival of color, and in Guatemala City a huge event known as the Old Love Parade takes place, attracting tourists from all over the world. A fun Valentine’s Day tradition among children in the Dominican Republic and El Salvador is a small gift exchange similar to Secret Santa. Whilst in Ecuador the men traditionally wait till night fall to senerade their lovers outside of their house. In certain Latin American countries Valentines Day is not celebrated on February 14th. Valentine's Day is celebrated on Feb. 14 in Peru, and orchids are normally exchanged in lieu of roses. In Mexico , Día de San Valentin or El Día del Amor y la Amistad (the day of love and friendship) begins after Christmas, adoration and prosperity is expressed through gifts of candies, balloons and flowers, especially among migrant laborers. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Guatemala by giving ‘normally‘ flowers, chocolates, cards and whatever your creativity allows to show you affections.
