Arizona took a page from Oregon’s playbook and officially joined the Union on Valentine’s Day 1912. President William Howard Taft initially rejected Arizona’s application for statehood the previous year, but Arizona was persistent. Taft finally signed the proclamation to make Arizona the 48 th state on February 14, 1912.
