There are two main stories about the origins and history of Valentine's Day. The first involves an old Roman fertility festival called Lupercalia. The second story is about Saint Valentine, a Christian priest who secretly married couples against the orders of the Roman Emperor and was imprisoned and died on February 14th. The history of St. Valentine’s Day In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno, the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses, and also the Goddess of women and marriage. Young boys and girls lived strictly separated until the festival of Lupercalia, which began on the following day, February 15th. Valentine's Day was imported to North America in the 19th century by British settlers. In the second half of the 20th century, the practice of giving gifts along with paper-laced cards became popular.
