Chocolate gifting became a Valentine’s Day staple thanks to Richard Cadbury’s invention of the heart-shaped chocolate box in the 1800s. Today, chocolates are one of the top gifts exchanged on Valentine’s Day, with everything from fancy truffles to giant chocolate bars making their way into hearts and hands. If I could celebrate Valentine’s Day in one country, it’d be Brazil! If you like to party, the Brazilian’s will love you. Brazil’s Valentines carnival runs from February – March, every year. The local equivalent to Valentine’s Day in Brazil, is, “Dia dos enamorados” or “Lovers day” and is celebrated on June 12. The Brazilian Every year on Feb. 14, Americans celebrate Valentine's Day. Unique Valentine’s Day Traditions in Finland and Estonia. In Finland and Estonia, Valentine’s Day is Friendship Day (Ystävän Päivä in Finnish and Sõbrapäev in Estonian). Families, friends, and couples come together to share meals and enjoy activities like skating or sledding. In addition to celebrating Valentine’s Day on February 14th, the Czechs also mark the Day of Love on May 1st. Traditions include kissing beneath cherry or birch blossom for luck and making a pilgrimage to the statue of Karel Hynek Mácha in Petrin Park, the poet who penned some of the country’s greatest romantic works. Although Valentine’s Day is one of the new Denmark festivals, the country also celebrates the day of love and romance on 14th Feb with a twist. In Denmark, Valentine’s Day is not limited to roses and chocolates. Friends and lovers exchange handmade cards with pressed white flowers that are called snowdrops. Valentine’s Day on February 14 is dedicated to love, sweet gestures, and scrambling for last-minute cards or dinner reservations. The day is set aside to show that special someone in your life how much you care and it has become tradition to exchange gifts such as flowers, chocolates, or thoughtful notes. This Day can be seen as a celebration or a lament of being single. There is also Rose Day in May, Kiss Day in June, and Hug Day in December. China. Valentine’s Day is known as the Qixi Festival or the Seventh Night Festival in China. This holiday falls on the 7th Day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar. South Korea actually has three Valentine’s Day-esque holidays: February 14, when the girls give the boys candy; White day, held a month later on March 14 when the boys return the favor; and Navigate Valentine’s Day at work like a pro.
