Valentine’s Day celebrates all forms of love—romantic, familial, and platonic—not just romance. Its origins stem from ancient Roman festivals and Christian traditions honoring St. Valentine. Valentines Day. Who says that this day should be restricted only to romantic love? Valentine’s Day is Tuesday, February 14. No other day can conjure such powerful imagery of chocolate, flowers, romance and love. It is a commercially driven day that provokes strongly divided reactions to the bewildering display of hearts, and starry-eyed romance. Valentine’s Day is for lovers — but you don’t need a romantic soulmate to celebrate. The holiday is a chance to consider just how rich, diverse and beneficial every form of love is in the human experience, whether it comes from your family, friends, pets, neighbors or community. Now, I don’t want to criticize the fact that we have a day dedicated to celebrating love and romance—I have no problem with that. Instead, I want to examine how our culture has warped the concept of having a day to celebrate love. Valentine’s Day feels too forced and commercialized to be sincere. Yes, chocolates and roses and jewelry are Valentine’s Day encourages the idea that the occasional grand gesture of love (posh restaurant, flowers, and champagne on the 14th February, and, maybe, on birthdays and anniversaries) is what Valentine's Day is for lovers — but you don't need a romantic soulmate to celebrate.
