And these Black history icons have a lot to teach us about what love means not only in relationships, but in our community and for ourselves. On Valentine’s Day, let’s take some lessons on love from 10 Black history makers of yesterday and today who remind us what real love should look like. Black History Month, Valentine's Day and love. Every year, Valentine’s Day is during Black History Month; the two are not necessarily related Learn about the inspiring couples who shaped Black and American history, from the Kings to the Parks, from Wells to the Barnetts, from Dee to Davis, and from Grimké to Weld. These partners worked together for civil rights, journalism, education, and more. February is a very short but powerful month as it is Black History Month and Valentine’s Day is on Feb. 14. That makes for a great combination for Black Love Day that is celebrated on Feb. 13. More recently in 2020, another inflection point arrived when the Wall Street Journal and Forbes acknowledged its importance and major corporations began organizing their own Black History Month events. Valentine’s Day, depending on whom you believe, began in the third century when two guys named Valentine were martyred and became saints in Happy Valentine’s Day, and importantly, Happy Black History Month! Since 1976, U.S. presidents have recognized February as Black History Month. February’s historical designation makes it a time to celebrate African American and Black people’s voices, cultures, adversities, and triumphs. February is a special month for black people because we find ourselves at an intersection of two powerful celebrations – Black History Month and Valentine's Day. This unique convergence provides an opportunity to reflect on the rich tapestry of black love that has woven its way through history, transcending time and leaving an indelible mark The author shares how Valentine’s Day became a meaningful holiday for her as a Black woman and a way to express love to her family and friends. She reflects on the challenges of emotional vulnerability in the Black community and the importance of celebrating the holiday during Black History Month. Learn about three iconic figures who fought for Black rights and justice on 14th February: Frederick Douglass, Moneta Sleet, and Charlotta Bass. Discover their achievements, challenges, and legacy in this article. It seems somewhat ironic that Valentine’s Day should fall in the middle of what was much later declared “Black History Month.” Equally ironic is the unconditional “tough love” of Black Americans recorded throughout history, for their family members as well as for the families of their slave masters and their immediate families. I hope your students enjoy searching for the Black History Month terms in the word searches above. They create a great segue into a lesson on black history or a helpful review of a previous lesson. My compulsion to not emote created my love for Valentine’s Day. It does, however, feature Black History Month, St. Valentine’s Day, and New York Encounter. February 2 | Pilgrimage of Courageous Hope: Black History Month Mass | Church of St. Joseph and St. Boniface On Feb. 16, guest chef Tie Whittaker, owner of Buttermilk Boutique in Clayton, will host a pop-up Afternoon Tea Service celebrating Black History Month with seatings at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Peloton’s Black History Month class collection. So far two classes from 2025 have been added to the collection – a 30 minute Gospel Glow Yoga Flow with Chelsea Jackson Roberts from 2/2/25 and a 30 minute Supreme Soul Row with Ash Pryor from 2/3/25. There are Black History Month virtual field trips and activities, along with Valentine’s Day games. When I began brainstorming February classroom ideas, I wanted to focus on the entire month of February, not just Valentine’s Day. Black History Month activities are also included in the February classroom activities.
